Cissus quadrangularis: A Plant That Supports Bone Health and Metabolism

A Traditional Plant with Modern Research

Cissus quadrangularis L. is a succulent plant from the Vitaceae family that grows in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and Asia. Its characteristic four-angled, fleshy stems resemble a climbing vine.

In traditional Indian medicine, it has been used for hundreds of years. It is most commonly associated with supporting bone healing, but historically it has also been used for various other health conditions.

Modern scientific studies are now examining the bioactive compounds found in this plant. These compounds may contribute to cell protection, neutralization of free radicals, and support for tissue regeneration.


Support for Bone Health

Healthy bones are the foundation of an active life. However, as we age, bone density naturally declines, increasing the risk of fractures and bone-related diseases.

In recent years, Cissus quadrangularis has become the subject of several clinical studies investigating its effects on bone metabolism. Results suggest that extracts from this plant may influence biomarkers associated with bone formation and bone tissue regeneration.

A systematic review of clinical studies published in 2025 analyzed randomized controlled trials investigating the effects of Cissus quadrangularis on bone biomarkers and bone healing. The analysis included studies from the PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases.

The study suggests that Cissus quadrangularis may support processes related to bone regeneration and bone metabolism.


Fracture Healing

The process of fracture healing is biologically complex. It involves the coordinated activity of multiple factors including growth factors, inflammatory cytokines, hormones, amino acids, and bone cells.

In one clinical study, researchers followed 60 patients aged 20–35 with fractures of the lower jaw (mandible). Participants were divided into two groups:

  • a group taking capsules containing Cissus quadrangularis extract
  •  a control group

Clinical and radiological examinations showed improved fracture healing in patients who took Cissus quadrangularis.

Researchers also observed increased expression of osteopontin, a protein that plays an important role in bone formation and bone tissue remodeling.

The study concluded that Cissus quadrangularis may contribute to faster bone tissue regeneration and earlier remodeling of the bone callus.


Osteopenia and Bone Health in Postmenopausal Women

Osteopenia is a condition characterized by reduced bone density, which can progress to osteoporosis and increase the risk of fractures.

In a clinical study involving 60 postmenopausal women with osteopenia, researchers evaluated the effects of Cissus quadrangularis over a 24-week period.

The results showed that taking the extract slowed the process of bone remodeling, reflected by a reduction in bone turnover biomarkers (BTM).

Although no significant change in bone mineral density (BMD) was observed, the findings suggest a potential role of this plant in supporting bone health.


Weight Regulation and Metabolic Health

Cissus quadrangularis is also being studied in the context of metabolic health and body weight regulation.

In an 8-week double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 67 participants, researchers investigated the effects of taking 300 mg of Cissus quadrangularis extract daily.

During the study period, researchers observed:

• a reduction in body fat

• improvement in certain metabolic parameters associated with metabolic syndrome

These results suggest that Cissus quadrangularis extract may support healthy metabolism and body weight regulation.

The combination of traditional use and modern clinical research makes Cissus quadrangularis an interesting plant in the field of dietary supplements.

Research suggests that its bioactive compounds may support:
